5 Causes of Increased Body Weight Besides Eating Lots
Knowing your weight gain can frustrate you, especially if you follow a healthy diet. So what caused it? The reality is that sometimes weight gain has nothing to do with what you eat or how much you exercise. Here are other factors that can make you gain weight, even though you are on a diet and follow a healthy diet.
1. Not sleeping enough
Maybe slashing a few hours from bedtime won't make you tired the next day, but in the long run it can cause you to add a few pounds. Because you wake up longer than sleeping, you feel you have a few extra hours so you consume more calories.
2. You are stressed
You may have heard of the stress hormone, cortisol, which protects your body from tense events. While an increase in cortisol levels can be beneficial for a short period of time, chronic stress can damage your body and cause weight gain. A 2018 study of Cell Metabolism shows there is a relationship between high levels of cortisol and fat mass. This study revealed that cortisol can affect a person's circadian rhythm, and when the increase and decrease in natural cortisol levels are negatively affected, it can cause weight gain.
3. You consume medicine
Some treatments for rheumatoid arthritis and even some migraines and heartburn medicines can cause weight gain. If you suspect that your medication affects your waistline, your doctor may be able to find alternative treatments that will not have certain side effects.
4. The body loses some nutrients
Having low levels of magnesium, iron, or lack of vitamin D can harm your immune system, reduce your energy level, or change your metabolism in a way that makes it more difficult to process calories.
5. Increased age
Aging is unavoidable, but there are steps you can take to increase your metabolism. We do burn as many calories in our 40s or 50s, as we use to burn in our 20s. So we need more exercise and less food, to maintain weight.
